  • Cup 45 : August 8, 2011
Drink: Water while at lunch in Palo Alto, CA
Around Cup 16, I was talking about 52 Cups with Todd, a friend at work when an idea hit him, “You should try to set up a meeting with Woz, the co-founder of Apple! I know he’d do it—in fact, I bet he’d even fly to Michigan.” I figured I had nothing to lose so I explored ways to contact him. I searched his website, tried Facebook, asked a few friends. Nothing worked. My last resort was to search Steve Wozniak on anywho.com. I called the phone number only to reach Steve Wozniak the pro fishing reporter, not Steve Wozniak the computer genius.

    Some fun facts on Woz
I could care less about hearing what a politician has to say. Hollywood bores me to tears. And I have no desire to meet whoever the latest rock star is (especially if the Bieber craze is still going on). Instead, my meaning of rock star is more in line with the old Intel campaign and Woz is, in my opinion, the Jim Morrison/Jimi Hendrix/Joan Jett/whoever-you-like rock star of the tech world.

After quitting Apple in 1985, Woz dedicated his energies to mathematics, electronics and philanthropic activities. We've never had a guest on The Engadget Show that inspired quite as much excitement as Steve Wozniak -- the crowd was pumped and the Woz was in full effect. Josh and Woz talked for a full 40 minutes about everything from Woz's white iPhone to the future of server storage to anecdotes about Apple, and it's all topped off with a little creative currency manipulation, as Woz promises us his custom $2 bills can get us "arrested, but not convicted."

Steve "Woz" Wozniak, the inventor of the personal computer and Apple Computer Inc. co-founder with Steve Jobs, knows something about innovation. The 60-year-old Californian created the Apple I and Apple II more than 30 years ago as an engineer at Hewlett- Packard. Woz left Apple shortly after the company went public, but remains an active inventor and philanthropist. However, Woz isn't all work and no play. He dated comedienne Kathy Griffin and appeared on "Dancing with the Stars."

Cassidy: Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is a Silicon Valley treasure
Steve Wozniak spent Thursday morning right where he belongs: at Mountain View's Computer History Museum. If it weren't such a cruel notion, the museum should put him in a glass case and add him to its new, $19 million makeover, set to open next month. The Woz is a treasure, a genuine Silicon Valley article and a fascinating artifact in his own way. Which is how he does things -- in his own way.

Interview with Steve Wozniak - co-founder of Apple Computer
Steve Wozniak (or Woz to his friends and admirers) not only founded one of the most important (technology-wise) and influential (culturally) companies to date but he also practically invented the personal computer. His design, that of interfacing with a computer using a keyboard and screen, is still the standard today. Before Woz conceived the PC people would use toggle switches for input and look at indicator lights to determine the output. Computers were for professionals and hobbyists only, they were not practical, not for personal use and certainly not affordable.

Steve Wozniak Pursuing All That’s Noble & Pure
"I grew up with very strong feeling of wanting to be a good person; I wanted to help others. I don’t like to stomp on people. I don’t want to think of some people as “special” and others not. I’m not interested in acting like I’m above others. Ironically, equal treatment of others really gets in the way of good management because I want to be fair to everyone."
